Keyword-rich domains (KRDs) or branded domains are web pages that use keywords in their content instead of generic words and phrases. Webmasters initially used them to help their websites appear higher in Google search results, but now this practice is detrimental to search engine rankings. So Google introduced ‘punishment’ algorithms against it.
Keywords used in KRDs can also describe web pages for different purposes. A webmaster may use KRDs in their web pages for many reasons. Some of them include the following:
Webmasters commonly use keyword-rich domains to optimize their websites for SEO and increase their ranking within search engines. They can also help build links that carry less weight than those built from standard links to web pages. For example, a webmaster may link to their KRD using the anchor text “This is a website about dog training” or “A resource for finding information about dog training” rather than “http://www.example.com/dog-training.htm”.
Keyword-rich domains can be helpful to webmasters who wish to ensure that their site contains many keywords they desire but who cannot spend time developing new content.
In some circumstances, webmasters must use keyword-rich domains on the web pages they have created, mainly when those pages are the landing pages for web forms. If they cannot create web pages with the same content and keywords as their KRD, they will need to create a new web page with those specific keywords to act as a landing page. This will make sure that visitors are directed to the right web page.
Keyword-rich domains are still widely used, and in fact, Google has recently started promoting sites built to gain more traffic from search engines. The only problem with these websites is that the Google algorithm punishes websites built using KRDs.
“The goal of the Google algorithm is to provide users with the most relevant, high-quality answers to their queries. While high-quality content should rank well in organic search, we don’t always see that reflected in our results. If low-quality sites try to game the system, they can often manipulate search rankings and fool users.”
Webmasters must update the Google database accordingly as they make site changes. A problem arises if a webmaster has spent time creating and optimizing a site using keyword-rich domains. Google will punish them for this as they think the site is being deliberately built to look better in search engine results.
Webmasters who are using KRDs on their web pages need to understand that their search ranking is being affected, so they need to create other web pages on the same website that are optimized using traditional means, such as creating content that is relevant to their visitor’s needs and adding keywords in the correct places.
