What is a PDF (Portable Document Format) file?

PDF is a universal file format. It's composed of characteristics of both text documents and graphic images. This means it's a widespread file format widely used worldwide.

PDF is so widely used because it preserves original document formatting.

PDF files are always the same on any device or operating system. They don't look the same because we're used to using a specific font size on a particular screen.

How to open a PDF file?

Most people open their files in the most popular program available for their operating system. Adobe created the PDF standard, and its software is undoubtedly the most popular free PDF reader.

It's completely fine to use, and I find it to be a somewhat bloated program with many features you may never need or want to use. Most web browsers, like Chrome and Firefox, can open PDFs themselves.

Most people don't need an add-on, but it's handy to have one open automatically when you click a PDF link.

I recommend either SumatraPDF or MuPDF, which are good alternatives to the Adobe PDF reader. So you can read it for free, too.

What is PS (Postscript ) file

Files with the.ps extension were created between 1982 and 1984 by Doug Brotz, Bill Paxton, John Warnock, Ed Taft, and Charles Geschke at Adobe Systems.

Publishers commonly use PS files to make images available in print and digital format.

It seems impossible to print text and images at the same time. We used to create PDF files for printing, but now we print to the PostScript format, which this book uses.

The PostScript language was invented so that applications could interact with printers. It allows applications to display text and images on a single page.

The Apple LaserWriter, released in March of 1985, marked the first laser printer equipped with the PostScript standard. PostScript is a standard for sending fonts and formatting information from computers to printers.

This program was initially conceptualized as a computer programming language by John Gaffney; the file format was later developed.

PostScript files are primarily created with applications like Adobe Acrobat or Quark Express.

Though newer file formats of similar and better functionalities have been made since the older and traditional postscript format. But the old postscript is still supported by the more recent technologies; that's why the hardware producer provides the device driver software structure.

Most PS files function more like a GPS—with the proper instructions, your printhead can scribble the right pixel of character at the right spot.
